The key is to get the tape to create a smooth solid barrier along the edge. One good way to keep the paint from seeping under the tape is to paint a thin layer of clear acrylic over the edge of the tape, wait until it is dry, then paint on your acrylic colour and pull away the masking tape.

“The adhesive itself is not dangerous to your skin, though wearing it for prolonged periods of time can result in the skin not getting enough air or natural moisturization, which isn't ideal in any situation,” Dr. Engelman shares.

Using Tape to Paint Shapes - Step by Step Instructions

Tape around each shape, making sure you protect all areas that should not be painted. And, keep pencil lines inside the border of the tape. Paint your shapes, and then allow paint to dry for at least 24 hours. Slowly remove the tape to reveal your finished design.

Seal the edges

Once you put your paper masking tape all over the place, you have to do a tiny little thing that many painters skip (or they're just too lazy to do it): seal the edges of the tape by running a flexible putty knife across the side of the tape closest to the surface you plan to paint.

Stencil it

Tear long strips of tape and stick them on wax paper. Use a ruler and pencil to sketch your stencil on the tape, then cut out the desired spaces. When you're ready to place the stencil, just peel off the wax paper. Make one large stencil or space out your strips to make smaller shapes.
